Blue is the new black

In the 70s, women felt happier leaving their mothers’ domestic roles behind. But, as women have taken on male-dominated roles, they have put more stress on themselves.
Now men feel happier about their lives while women take far more antidepressants and feel less happy no matter what they achieve. – The New York Times, Sept. 20, 2009, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/20/opinion/20dowd.html?em

  1. I like the creative way that you summarized this article. You do a good job of making visualizations, yet expressing a serious topic at the same time. Good job!

  2. That sounds like a really interesting article. I have heard some different perspectives and stories about this same type of issue and it really makes you think.

  3. Was this article based off results of a survey or a poll taken in the 70s and compared with modern data? It's interesting that researchers can take statistics from the 70s and compare them with statistics from today. I wonder what sociologists will do with this new revelation?

  4. Good question, Hannah--
Yes, the data was taken from this General Social Survey that has tracked men and women’s moods since 1972. Additionally, a former Gallup researcher, Marcus Buckingham, has a new blog on The Huffington Post and has written “Find Your Strongest Life: What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently.” There wasn’t space to mention the five major studies and other good resources.
I really like The New York Times and wish there was more time to read it thoroughly every day.

  6. True Grimes-
Thank you for your comments. Before attending Anoka Ramsey Community College I attended Pine City Technical College, as well as University of the Nations. Thank you for noticing my speedy blogs. I must admit that when taking 18 credits online, I've had to be prompt on my homework due to getting behind issues. I always appreciate your comments, and I wish you well on your goals in writing!
